Honestly? It's peak hypocrisy, and most people in the gay dating scene know it.

The contradiction is glaring. "No Picture, No Chat" as a policy is a reasonable enough preference - people want to know who they're talking to. Fair. But demanding that from others while offering nothing yourself is fundamentally entitled behavior. You're essentially saying "I require transparency from you while giving you none in return." That's not a negotiation, that's a demand from a position of zero leverage.

Why people do it is usually one of a few things:

  • They're closeted and paranoid about being outed
  • They're in a relationship and cheating
  • They're a public figure or work somewhere conservative
  • They're insecure about their appearance and want to screen for "their type" before risking rejection
  • They think withholding their picture gives them power or control in the dynamic

The practical reality is that these profiles get ignored by most people worth talking to. Anyone confident and experienced on dating apps has learned that blank/faceless profiles with demands are almost always a waste of time - either they ghost once you send a pic, they're catfishing, or the actual meetup never materializes. And of course - even if you send a picture, they most often do not respond because they think you are not a match and not even worth telling you so.

The German Besserwisser Gene: Why They Ghost Without Blocking (And Why I Had to Unlearn My Own Arrogance)
A German insider confesses why the “no interest, no response” culture on dating apps hits different in Germany—and why we can’t seem to just block people.

The entitlement angle is what really grates people. A profile that's literally just "NPNC" with no other information - no interests, no personality, nothing - is communicating that they believe their attention is a gift to you, and you must earn it. For most people swiping, that's an immediate pass.

If discretion is genuinely needed, there are better ways to handle it - send a face pic privately in the first message, explain your situation briefly, or at least offer something about yourself. Blank profiles with ultimatums just read as lazy and arrogant.

You are not entitled. But you can be enabled.
You are not entitled that people need to have sex with you. But you can be enabled.

When to just block/ignore:

  • The profile is completely blank - no bio, no stats, nothing
  • The only text is "NPNC" or similar demands
  • Your gut says time-waster
  • You're not that curious about them

This covers probably 80-90% of those profiles. Don't overthink it. Your time has value too.

The narrow case for reaching out:

If something about the profile suggests they might be worth it - even partial info, a body pic, decent stats, whatever - you can send something, but keep these rules in mind:

  • Keep it short. One or two sentences max. Don't write a paragraph to someone who wrote nothing.
  • Don't lead with a face pic unprompted. Make them engage first.
  • Be direct and a little playful about the irony. Something like:
"Interesting policy for someone with no picture themselves - what's the story?"

or simply:

"Hey, I know your deal - happy to swap pics once we've said hello."

This does two things: it signals you're not a pushover who'll just comply on demand, and it gives them an easy opening to explain themselves.

What their response tells you:

  • They reply warmly and explain their situation = potentially worth continuing
  • They immediately demand your pic without engaging = block, move on
  • They don't reply at all = they were never serious, confirmed time-waster

The honest reality is that the vast majority of those profiles go nowhere regardless of what you do. The ones that are genuinely discrete for legitimate reasons are rare, and those people usually know their profile is off-putting and will appreciate you cutting through it with a bit of directness rather than either ignoring them or blindly complying.

Don't invest much energy either way. A quick message or a quick block - both are fine. Just don't spend mental energy agonizing over it.
